Restore Your Unique Ceramic Pottery with 3D Scanning and Printing
Share
Ceramic art has a soul of its own. Whether it’s a handcrafted bowl, a unique sculpture, or a meaningful gift, pottery often carries deep personal or historical value. Unfortunately, accidents happen. A favorite piece may crack over time or suffer chips and surface damage. But now, with modern 3D scanning and ceramic 3D printing, you have a way to restore or recreate these treasures with amazing detail and care.
At 3DPrinters.biz, located just outside of Philadelphia — a city known for some of the greatest architecture and craftsmanship in the world — we specialize in helping artists, collectors, and everyday lovers of pottery bring their unique ceramic pieces back to life.
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to how the process works when you bring your ceramic piece to us:
Step 1: Bring in Your Piece for a Consultation
Start by bringing your ceramic piece to our studio in Blue Bell. Whether it’s a slight crack, a chipped edge, or a piece that needs reinforcement, we’ll take a look and discuss the best way to recreate it. If your item is mostly intact, we can usually move right to scanning without any additional prep.
Step 2: Choose Your Scanning Option
Depending on the level of detail you need, we offer two scanning options:
A quick photogrammetry scan, ideal for capturing general shapes and surface textures. This is great for decorative pieces, gifts, or items where a perfect engineering fit is not critical.
A high-precision scan that captures measurements down to .002–.004 inches. If your piece has fine carved details, intricate textures, or you want an almost exact match to the original, this is the route we recommend.
We’ll help you decide which scanning method is right for your needs and your budget.
Step 3: Digital Processing and Minor Repairs
Once the scan is complete, we digitally process the model. Small cracks, surface imperfections, or chips can be digitally corrected at this stage, preparing the piece for a clean and accurate reproduction.
Please note: if a piece is shattered into many fragments or has large missing areas, full recreation is a more complex process that would require advanced digital sculpting and modeling. Our services focus on restoring and replicating mostly intact or lightly damaged pieces through scanning and printing.
Step 4: 3D Printing Your New Ceramic Piece
After the digital model is finalized, we move into 3D printing. We use true 3D printed ceramic materials — not plastics or look-alikes — to produce a new version of your piece. Once printed, the ceramic is fired and finished to give it the strength, feel, and beauty you expect from authentic pottery.
You can choose to match the original glaze and color or explore a new finish if you want to put a slightly fresh spin on an old favorite.
Step 5: Pickup and Enjoy
When your new ceramic piece is ready, we’ll contact you to arrange pickup. Many of our clients are amazed at how closely the restored or recreated piece matches the original. Whether it’s for display, continued use, or simply to hold onto a memory, your pottery will have a second life.
